How John's experience in the market of the first chapter affects him is witnessed by Natasha and Waya. Even though John is with his brother and Natasha who will not harm him, the triggers present themselves in his reality along with affecting more of his senses.
Also as Zac's identity takes over is representative of others perceiving someone who has been through a very traumatic event as a different person. This difference may be for protection, even more so than what is really needed.
